My name is Eugene, I am the husband of one wife, whose name is Julia, we have been together for 16 years. We have three children, Samuil - 14 years old, Daria - 13 years old, Nazar - 9 years old.
Our family is from the city of Slavyansk, this is the Donetsk region. On the first day of the war, we woke up at about five in the morning from explosions somewhere far away. A little later, from the news, we learned that Russia had attacked Ukraine.
We hoped that this would not happen again like in 2014. In 2014, we were already leaving our city, we experienced these explosions, the fear of children and insomnia when the Russian military captured it and this happened again in 2022. We didn’t want to leave, because we had a job, the children went to school, we had our own apartment, this is what my wife and I had for 16 years, it remained there. We thought for a long time to leave or stay, but the time came when everyone with children was told to evacuate if possible. We gathered in one evening, took very few things, the most necessary and documents. We left by evacuation train to the border with Poland, later after we left at this railway station in Kramatorsk, a rocket exploded and killed more than 50 people.
In Europe, we still did not know where to go and our friends sent us to Germany to a German family in which we were well received.
But we don’t have acquaintances and friends there, and in a miraculous way, Kim and her mother found out about us through our friends from America. Who helped us a lot financially so that we could come to the USA and be with our friends and, first, be safe. Thank you so much to International Bridge Ministry and to everyone who was involved in our lives during this difficult and uncertain time.
